How To Keep Your Dog's Bed Clean and Odor-Free

As companions, best friends, and cuddle buddies, pets deserve a comfortable, clean, odor-free place to rest. But as any pet parent knows, that's not always the reality.

Dogs, as amazing as they are, can be messy. They walk around barefoot, they roll in the grass, and dig in the dirt. They drool, they shed, they sneeze—then they carry everything they've picked up on their paws and fur to their beds at naptime.

If dog beds aren't cleaned regularly, all that grime can build up pretty quickly, turning their cozy bed into a mound of unsightly stains and offensive odors.

How often should pet beds be cleaned?

In short, a dog's bedding should be cleaned as often as you clean your own sheets. If you don't wash your dog's bedding that often, don't be alarmed—only about 20% of dog owners do. But, once you learn what could be lurking in that pet bed on your living room floor, you might just make it a priority.

Dr. Kelly Reynolds, Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Arizona found that dog beds are one of the top 10 germiest spots in the entire house due to the amount of funk they can harbor. In addition to dirt, drool, and food stains, pet beds were host to harmful bacteria like MRSA, parasites, fecal matter, urine, pollen, skin cells, body oils, and more.

But don't worry, it's easy to keep your dog's bed clean and fresh so both of you can enjoy a good night's sleep.

How To Clean Your Dog's Bed With Pet Bed Cleaner

Unique Pet Care’s Pet Bed Cleaner is made with a powerful blend of readily biodegradable surfactants that clean urine, feces, vomit, food spills, stains, and other pet mishaps on contact and a proprietary blend of probiotics and enzymes that go to work permanently eliminating stains and odors. It works on beds, blankets, pillows, cushions, mattresses, crate pads, and more.

And if your dog shares your bed, it'll work on that, too—all without masking odors or leaving behind any residues.

Spot Cleaning Your Pet's Bed

There will be times when it isn't necessary to wash your dog's entire bed, but only spot clean a smaller mess. Unique's Pet Bed Cleaner will make spot cleaning a breeze.

First, remove any solids and blot up as much liquid as you can from the pet bed with a paper towel or other absorbent material. Next, spray the area liberally with Pet Bed Cleaner. Cover the affected area with a warm, damp, white towel and allow it to sit for a few hours. Then, remove the towel and allow the bed to air dry.

You'll immediately notice that stains and odors have disappeared like magic. That's the power of Unique's proprietary blend of probiotics and enzymes at work!

Pet Bed Cleaner erases stains and eliminates odors, but you'll still want to wash your dog's bed on a regular basis to thoroughly disinfect it.

Beds With Removable Covers

If your dog's bed has a removable cover, take the cover off and use Pet Bed Cleaner to pretreat any stains or stinky spots. Allow the Pet Bed Cleaner to sit on the bed cover for about a half hour before laundering in your washing machine on a warm water setting.

While the cover is in the wash, you can also use Pet Bed Cleaner to remove stains and odors from the pillow/pad inside your dog's bed. Spray thoroughly on any areas of the pillow/pad with stains, spots, or odors. Cover with a warm, damp towel and allow to sit for several hours. Then remove the towel and allow to air dry.

Make sure the pad and cover are both completely dry before reassembling.

Beds Without Removable Covers

If your dog's bed doesn't have a removable cover, you can still use Pet Bed Cleaner to clean and refresh it. Start by removing any solids and blotting up excess liquids with an absorbent material.

Next, spray any areas with stains or odors liberally with Pet Bed Cleaner. If the bed is small enough to fit in your washing machine, let it soak for about a half hour, then wash in warm water. If the bed is too large for your washer, cover with a warm, damp, white towel and allow it to sit for several hours. Then, remove the towel and allow the bed to air dry completely.

How To Disinfect Your Dog's Bed

As mentioned above, dog beds can harbor a lot of germs. In addition to regular cleaning, you'll want to disinfect the bed, too. Remember, exposing your dog to disinfectants, especially via the bedding that they spend a lot of time on, can be very dangerous, even life-threatening. Instead, we recommend using heat to kill any germs that may be present.

Dr. Reynolds said that high-heat drying for at least 28-minutes is the most effective way to kill germs and viruses. For smaller pet beds, this is an easy task. Just toss in the dryer and run on a high-heat cycle for about a half hour.

If the pet bed is too large to fit in the dryer, place it outside in direct sunlight for several hours. Allow the sun's heat plus ultraviolet rays to kill any germs on the bed.

As you can see, it's important to make cleaning your dog's bed a part of your regular housekeeping routine. With Unique's Pet Bed Cleaner, it's easy.
